In Practice

What Cover Actually Saves You

Three common failures, and the difference cover makes on the day.

Typical repair bills, with and without cover

Automatic gearbox failure
A five-year-old family SUV, 68,000 miles. Gearbox replaced and programmed, 10 hours labour plus parts.
Roughly £2,400 without cover
Turbocharger failure
A diesel hatchback at 82,000 miles. Turbo, oil feed pipes, oil and filter change, 6 hours labour.
Roughly £1,450 without cover
Air conditioning compressor
Compressor seized, system flushed and re-gassed, 4 hours labour.
Roughly £780 without cover

Illustrative examples using typical UK parts and labour rates, not quotations. Every claim is assessed on the vehicle, the fault and the policy terms.

Why It Matters

Cars Go Wrong. The Data Is Not Subtle.

This is not scaremongering — it is the published national picture.

28%
of UK cars fail their MOT at the first attempt, according to DVSA test data
£800–£3,000
typical cost of a gearbox replacement in the UK, including labour
£50–£180
hourly labour rates at UK garages — before a single part is fitted

An MOT does not even test the expensive things. It checks lights, brakes, tyres and structure — not engines, gearboxes, turbochargers or hybrid drive systems. A car can pass on Monday and need a four-figure repair on Friday. See the reliability data →

Common Questions

Before You Buy

Can I use my own garage?

Yes. Tell them you have ClearPath cover and that the repair needs authorising before work begins. We settle with the garage directly wherever possible, so you are not left waiting on a refund.

What is the claim limit?

Up to £3,000 per claim, with unlimited claims throughout your policy. Garage labour is covered up to £100 per hour, which comfortably covers independent garages across the UK. Main dealer rates can exceed that, and you would cover the difference.

My car is older and high mileage. Can I still get cover?

Often yes. Eligibility depends on age and mileage limits, and those are exactly the vehicles where cover tends to earn its keep. Get a quote and you will know in under two minutes.

Do I have to buy at the same time as the car?

No. You can take out cover on a car you have owned for years. What matters is that the vehicle does not already have a fault — no policy anywhere covers a problem that existed before it started.

What happens if I sell the car?

Cover can usually be transferred to the new owner, which is a genuine selling point on a private sale. Contact us and we will arrange it.

Does servicing affect my cover?

Yes, and this catches people out. Your vehicle must be serviced in line with the manufacturer's schedule, and you need to keep the receipts. Missed servicing is one of the most common reasons a claim is declined by any provider.

Is a warranty the same as breakdown cover?

No. Breakdown cover gets you moving at the roadside. A warranty pays for the repair when a component fails. They are complementary, not alternatives — though recovery is included with your ClearPath policy when your vehicle cannot be driven.

Included and excluded

Transparency Matters

A warranty is only as good as the list it is built on. Here is what a ClearPath policy pays for, and what it does not — set out plainly, before you buy rather than at claim stage.

Covered

What your warranty pays for

Sudden, unexpected mechanical and electrical failure of the components listed in your cover document — parts and labour, up to £3,000 per authorised claim.

  • EngineMajor internal moving parts — pistons, bearings, valve train and the components that drive them.
  • Gearbox and transmissionManual and automatic, including the clutch assembly and final drive.
  • TurbochargerTurbo and supercharger units, up to 7 years or 80,000 miles.
  • DrivelineDrive shafts, propeller shafts, CV and universal joints, and the differential.
  • Steering and suspensionRacks, column motors, pumps and the suspension components named in the schedule.
  • Cooling, heating and air conditioningRadiator, water pump, thermostat, heater matrix and the air-conditioning compressor.
  • ElectricsStarter, alternator, sensors, motors, control units and wiring looms.
  • Fuel systemPump, injectors, tank sender and associated components.
  • Hybrid and EV driveMotors, power electronics and charging components on hybrid and electric plans.
  • Recovery and vehicle hireUp to £60 towards recovery, and up to £45 a day for 7 days on longer repairs, on an authorised claim.
Not covered

What it does not pay for

No UK warranty covers these, ours included. Any provider suggesting otherwise is setting you up for a rejected claim.

  • Wear and tearBrake pads and discs, tyres, wiper blades, clutch facings, bushes and wheel bearings wear out with use. That is a service item, not a failure.
  • Routine servicingOil and filter changes, spark and glow plugs, auxiliary belts, cambelts and scheduled work.
  • ConsumablesOrdinary 12V and auxiliary batteries, exhausts and fluids — items expected to be replaced during normal ownership.
  • Accidental or reckless damageCollision, impact and deliberate damage. That is what your motor insurance is for.
  • Pre-existing faultsAnything already wrong when the policy started, whether you knew about it or not.
  • Aftermarket parts and softwareNon-manufacturer-approved items, remaps and modifications, and failures arising from them.
  • Unauthorised repairsWork begun before we have assessed the claim and issued an authorisation number.
  • Cosmetic damagePaintwork, bodywork, trim and glass.
  • Missed servicingIf the car has not been serviced as required, a related failure may not be covered. Keep your receipts.

This is a summary, not the contract. Your cover document lists every covered component by name, and anything not on that list is not covered. Read it alongside your Validation Certificate, which confirms the limits that apply to your vehicle. If anything is unclear, call us on 020 4577 0371 before you need to claim rather than after.
